Each department at RRU is responsible for acquiring their own label printers. Most (all?) label printers on campus are DYMO brands. The unit we recommend is:
- DYMO LabelWriter 450 Label Printer, which is available at Grand and Toy.
- A slightly faster version of the same printer, the DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo Label Printer, is also available at Grand and Toy.
Departments are also responsible for purchasing their own labels.
These printers are most often connected to a specific computer and used by one person.
Why can't I share my Dymo Label Printer?
In the last year, changes have been made to permissions levels on computers on campus in order to improve our security posture. The sharing of devices such as label printers (or folders/files etc. - not just label printers) directly off a particular computer is a potential security issue. At this time, the only option for using this type of device is to have it installed/attached to one computer and used by whoever is logged into that computer.
Departments can choose to purchase individual units for each person needing to print labels OR the label printer can be moved around from person to person, as needed. There are of course, drawbacks to either of these approaches - money and convenience.
We are looking into other options and will update this article if the current situation changes.
