There can be occasions where a label printer is installed on another computer in your department and you would like to print on it.  Once the label printer is shared, you can do the following to add the Label printer to your computer.

No longer available on Windows 10

Security Group Policy for Win10 no longer allows locally shared printers. If you want to print to a Dymo label printer, the printer must be installed locally.

Adding the shared label printer to your computer

  • First you need to have the computer name of the computer where the label printer is connected.
  • On your computer, click on the Start button and enter \\[Computername] in the “Search” or “run” field.  Make sure you add the two "\\" before the computer name and include no spaces.
  • Press enter on your keyboard
  • You should now see the label printer listed.  Simply double-click on the label printer icon
(If you do not see the label printer listed, then it has not been shared.  The owner of the computer, with the label printer connected, needs to Share the Label Printer)
  • Sit back and wait for the driver to install.
    • Typing on the keyboard could cancel the installation.
    • You might get a warning asking if you want to install the drivers, click yes
  • When the installation is complete, it will open the Printer queue and add it to your printer list.
  • Close the Windows, you are done.

A few things to note

  • The computer with the label printer does not need to be logged in to be able to print to the label printer, but it does need to be powered on.
  • If the computer frequently goes to "sleep" preventing you from printing, then change the power saver settings, or contact Computer Services for assistance.

If your computer says the driver cannot be found

If a printer is connected to a computer that has an older operating system then the one that is sharing the printer, you could get an error saying that there is no compatible printer driver available.  This can also happen if installing the label printer on a computer running a different OS (Ie, source is running Windows 7 32bit, but your computer is Windows 7 64bit).  The fix is to download the driver first:

  • Find a suitable printer driver.  For the Dymo Label 450 Turbowriter/Labelwriter, go here.
  • You want to click on the “click here” link under XP/Vista/7 32bit beside LabelWriter 300, 400, 450 Series in the table (or 64bit if your computer is running Windows 7 64bit).
  • Once downloaded, install the driver, then try to follow the procedure above to install the printer.
