Special thanks to our friends in the library who offer these additional tips for being ready for the new computer and making the best of it when it arrives.

You may also want to:

  • Jot down any user names and passwords you have saved for internet applications – some  information will transfer over in the profile migration and others may not.
  • Note the printers you use so you can easily re add them when you get your new computer (instructions for how to do this will be left on your keyboard)
  • Record the shortcuts you use in Email/Excel/Word because they won't exist on your new computer.  This is because these shortcuts are saved on the version of Email/Excel/Word that you are currently using but the new computer will have a new installation so...  fresh start.

Some of us found the new default colour scheme hard to get used to.  There are other options and you can change them by following these directions:

To change the background color and design of all your Office programs, go to  File > Options > General > Office Theme.

If you have trouble discerning read and unread messages, you could try changing the font size:

  • Go to view
  • Click on view settings
  • Click Conditional Formating
  • Uncheck everything but Unread Mail
  • Click Font
  • Play around with the font size
  • You may have to restart outlook to notice the difference
  • You can play around in this menu to make other changes as well.  You could make the fonts bigger for everything in the list if you choose to.

The cursor is dynamic and some people found it very hard to get used to.

If you have a shared email box (RRUBookstore for example) the default shows only one year of history. Since many of us do not have access to archives for those boxes, we needed to reset the default:

  • On the File tab, click Account Settings, and then click Account Settings.
  • On the E-mail tab, double-click your Microsoft Exchange account.
  • In the Change Account dialog box, drag the Mail to keep offline slider to the desired number of months or to All to synchronize all email messages.

  • Click Next.
  • Click OK when you're prompted to restart Outlook to complete the configuration change.
  • Click Finish.
  • Restart Outlook.
  • You'll need to restart your computer (which may take a while) and then you may need to wait a bit until they all returned.
